Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that starting therapy can feel like a big step. Here are answers to some common questions about getting started with The Messy Mid.

Common Questions
Do I need a referral?
No. You're welcome to book directly with us without a referral. However, if you'd like to claim a Medicare rebate, you'll need a referral and a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP before your first session. A referral from a psychiatrist or paediatrician is also accepted. If you're registered with MyMedicare, your Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral need to come from your MyMedicare-registered practice. If you're unsure, ask your GP's reception team when you book your appointment.
How do Medicare and private health claims work?
Medicare: With a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral, you can claim a Medicare rebate for up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year. Your GP's initial referral covers up to six sessions, after which your GP will review your progress before referring you for further sessions. Our fee is $260 per session, and you'll pay the gap between our fee and the Medicare rebate. Rebates are processed into your nominated account once your session is paid. Private health insurance: If your extras cover includes psychology, you may be able to claim part of your session fee through your health fund. The amount depends on your level of cover, so we recommend checking with your fund directly. Please note that Medicare and private health insurance can't both be claimed for the same session. You can choose whichever option suits you best.
Is telehealth as effective as face-to-face sessions?
For many people, yes. Research suggests that therapy delivered by video can be as effective as in-person therapy for a range of concerns, including anxiety, depression and adjusting to life changes. Telehealth can also make support easier to fit into a busy stage of life. There's no travel, and you can attend from home or your office. All you need is a private, quiet space and a stable internet connection. Some people simply prefer being in the room, and that's completely okay. We offer both options, and you're welcome to move between them. Medicare rebates are available for eligible sessions whether you attend in person or online.
What happens in the first session?
Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. There's no pressure to share everything at once. We'll talk about what's brought you to therapy, what's happening in your life right now, and what you'd like to be different. We'll also cover practical matters such as confidentiality, how sessions work, and any questions you have. By the end of the session, we'll begin to shape a plan together that fits your goals. Sessions run for approximately [50] minutes. It's very normal to feel a little nervous before a first appointment. Many people find it a relief simply to have a space to talk things through.
