Meet Gillian

Gillian is a Clinical Psychologist with a strong interest in supporting people through the many changes and challenges of midlife. She created The Messy Mid after noticing a gap in psychological support for people navigating this often challenging chapter. Too often, mental health care overlooks the role hormones play in shaping mood, sleep, energy and overall wellbeing during these middle years.
Gillian recognised that many women and men in midlife were left feeling unseen and misunderstood when seeking help. The Messy Mid was born from her commitment to offering clinical psychology that draws on evidence-based therapies, while also acknowledging the hormonal, physical and relational realities of this often messy season.

Special Interest in Neurodiversity
Alongside her work in midlife, Gillian has a special interest in neurodiversity, including ADHD and autism. She works from a neuroaffirming perspective, which means understanding neurodivergence as a natural difference in how people think, feel and experience the world, rather than something to be fixed. This interest connects closely with her midlife work.
Many adults, particularly women, are only recognised as neurodivergent later in life, often after years of masking, burnout or feeling that something didn't quite fit.
Hormonal changes during perimenopause can also bring new challenges for neurodivergent women. Gillian offers a space to make sense of these experiences with curiosity and compassion.

Co-Founder of
Pocket Psych
Co-founder of Pocket Psych Gillian is also the co-founder of Pocket Psych, a resource brand creating neuroaffirming guides, card decks and worksheets for clinicians, school counsellors and educators who support neurodivergent teens.
Pocket Psych grew from a shared belief that neurodivergent young people deserve resources that reflect who they are, and that the adults supporting them deserve practical, evidence-informed tools.
Her work with Pocket Psych keeps her closely connected to current research and practice in neurodiversity, which in turn informs her clinical work at The Messy Mid.
